We are glad you are here! We invite you to explore and read about the wide range of programs for children, youth, young adults, and older adults; our far-reaching ministries; and the life of our church. Then come visit our church and join us in the worship of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For additional information contact any member of our staff.
West Market Street United Methodist Church, founded in 1830, is a vibrant congregation dedicated to serving God and neighbor in the name of Jesus Christ. Our membership includes persons from a variety of backgrounds throughout Greensboro and Guilford County. Our presence downtown is an exciting part of who we are in ministry.
We seek to connect with persons throughout the week as well as worship on Sundays. Local and global missions, music and the arts, leadership development, and growing disciples of Jesus Christ are passions for our congregation. Vital to our ministry is energetic worship with preaching and music that is relevant to daily living and making sense of life through faith in Christ.
The mission of West Market Street United Methodist Church is to glorify God as we make, nurture and send forth disciples of Jesus Christ.
West Market Street United Methodist Church offers ministries for persons of all ages and stages in life and faith development.
Spiritual formation for children takes place in the atria, a warm, welcoming environment where children learn that they are children of God and can have a special relationship with God through Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Youth learn with caring, committed adults what it means to live out one's faith in the world and how our faith intersects with life issues. They are engaged through mission opportunities to act on their faith through love of neighbor.
A variety of opportunities abound for adults to begin to learn about the Christian faith and to mature as followers of Christ. Whether it is serving the community on Pancake Day, working in a Habitat House, being part of a Bible study, visiting shut-ins, or singing in the choir, there is a place for everyone to serve and grow in faith.
Newcomers often come to worship to get a feel for West Market Street United Methodist Church, but after a while, want to know more about our ministries and getting involved. We offer two special opportunities to learn more about West Market:

Methodist circuit rider Peter Doub established the congregation in 1830. A brick building was built on Elm Street in 1831, the first church built within the town limits. In 1851, a new church building for West Market Street Methodist Church was completed just west of the present site of the church. In 1893, ground was broken for the present sanctuary, which was completed in 1898. It was designed on the Akron plan, popular in church architecture from 1890 to 1920. The stained glass windows, purchased at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, IL in 1893, were donated as memorials.
In 1930 and again in 1952, additions were made to the church building to expand educational space. In the 1990's, the congregation decided to renovate the sanctuary, church building and build the Early Childhood Center, completed in 1999. Included in the renovation of the sanctuary was the construction of the Dobson-Rosales organ, a collaboration of Lynn Dobson of Lake City, IA and Manuel Rosales of Los Angeles, CA.
