West Market Street CROP Walk Highlights!

27th Annual Greensboro CROP Walk
“We walk because they walk.”

THANK YOU CROP WALKERS AND SPONSORS!!! 

We had a GREAT group of approximately 70 walkers of all ages who participated in the CROP Walk on Sunday, October 14th.  Thank you to walkers and sponsors! “CROP” stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. West Market’s total raised is $9,000.00. Every dollar given will make a difference in a life here in Greensboro and around the world. Thank you for your support.

Receives Two Awards from 2006 CROP Walk


Thanks to the generous support of West Market congregation members and our enthusiastic walkers,
West Market received a “Most Improved” Award and is now the 5th highest fundraiser for CROP Walk in Greensboro. This is a 132% increase over the previous year’s fundraising! Most importantly, both Greensboro Urban Ministry and Church World Service will be able to use these funds to help those who are hungry and in need here and around the world.

Local Charitable Organizations Supported by West Market Outreach Ministry

West Market Street United Methodist Church supports a wide variety of local charitable organizations with funds and volunteers.

Agents of Grace: West Market volunteers, along with volunteers from churches throughout the city, are placed at one of more than 85 different charitable organization and school sites around Greensboro to serve in a variety of ways on a day of ecumenical service in August of each year.  West Market contact is Dave Johnston (336-834-3240)

Alcoholics AnonymousWest Market provides meeting facilities for a local chapter.

FaithAction International House:  Based in Greensboro, FaithAction’s mission is to form a united community of many cultures by helping new neighbors from around the world adjust successfully to life in our community.  They plan and produce cultural events that allow all to grow in understanding and provide opportunities to celebrate diversity in the community.  Mark Sills, executive director, (336-379-0037)

Greensboro Housing CoalitionThe Housing Coalition promotes assistance in the areas of homelessness and the need for low-income, safe, affordable housing in our community. Beth Mckee-Huger, executive director, (336-691-9521)

Greensboro Urban Ministry:  GUM seeks to address the needs of the homeless and low income families & individuals by providing shelter (Weaver House, Pathways and Partnership Village), a soup kitchen (Potter’s House), emergency financial assistance, a food bank and clothes closet.  To volunteer, contact Gail Lewis (336-271-5962).

Habitat for Humanity:  West Market has committed to building two homes and repairing three in the next five years. Those interested in volunteering with Habitat on a weekly basis should contact Butch Sherrill at 336-275-4663.

HealthserveThis is an interfaith agency operated by Greensboro Urban Ministry, and it provides healthcare and services to the poor and indigent of Greensboro.

Lutheran Family Services:   Refugee Resettlement Program works to provide the needs of immigrant families new to Greensboro through financial, housing and volunteer support through the church community.

Mary’s House: A faith based ministry providing support and training to homeless mothers in addiction recovery and their children.   (336-275-0820)

Methodist Counseling Center The Greensboro agency is one of three regional centers sponsored by the United Methodist Church in WNC.  The agency addresses the needs of clergy and laity for faith-based counseling services.  (336-852-0606)

Mobile Meals:    Volunteers transport and distribute meals to senior citizens on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.  Drivers are needed to cover 19 routes with 15-20 stops per route. Contact Earl Betts   (336-274-3950 or northelm@triad.rr.com) to join in this mission.

People to People Liaison, Inc.:  An organization promoted by Baim Imatha, a West Market member, whose purpose is to promote and fund the education of children who have been victims of war in Africa as well as provide start-up loans and training classes for women and men to establish self-supporting businesses.  $255 is the annual education cost per child, and it covers school fees, materials, medical expenses and food. 

Salvation Army: This is a new Outreach Mission for West Market where volunteer opportunities abound:

Night Watch is a program of volunteers who seek the homeless in downtown Greensboro each Friday night offering hot food in winter and providing information regarding housing and support.  Contact Steve Still (336-235-0362)

Boys & Girls Clubs    There are six (6) Core Programs in the development of  (1)  Character and Leadership,  (2)  Education and Career,  (3) Health and Life Skills, (4) The Arts,  (5) Sports, Fitness and Recreation, and (6) Spiritual Growth. Fully staffed and supplemented by part-time volunteers, this program provides after school care; homework and/or tutoring assistance and computer assistance and/or training in a new, state of the art computer lab. Volunteer positions are available as coaches in all sports, summer camp guides and all after school programs.   

Sewing Group makes and provides blankets that are distributed to the homeless;  Salvation Army provides the equipment on site for outside group use.

Christmas Kettle Program is a primary source of revenue and each unit is autonomous.  Many churches and businesses in the area provide the man power and location for placement of the kettles each holiday season.  West Market shared responsibility with Muirs Chapel UMC for a kettle in 2006.

Center of Hope  Located on S. Eugene Street, the Center of Hope provides 56 emergency shelter beds, 40 transitional  housing beds, on-site childcare, personal hygiene products, laundry services, life skills training, substance abuse counseling, case management, transportation, a computer lab, self help and therapeutic groups, advocacy and referrals; hot meals and a library for everyone.

Disaster Services    As a first responder, Salvation Army offers disaster services in Spiritual Ministry, Mobile Feeding, Financial Assistance, Donated Materials, Counseling, Shelter, Reconstruction and Identification/Registration.

Scandinavian CaravanFor over 49 years, the Western NC Conference has exchanged teams, in alternating years, of young adults to minister in churches in both Scandinavian countries and our conference.  The teams share testimonies, music and more, along with participating in a cultural exchange.

Senior WheelsA medical transportation service for older adults, Senior Wheels provides rides to scheduled medical appointments.  Volunteers pick seniors up at their homes, drive to their appointments and take them back home.

Shepherd’s CenterWest Market houses this agency that serves the needs of senior citizens in the Greensboro area.  (336-370-4772)

UMAR-WNCC   (United Methodist Agency on Retardation for the WNCC):  This agency has built two group homes in the area for adults with developmental disabilities.  It operates primarily from the funding provided by supporting churches.

Washington Elementary School:  West Market provides volunteer support for the areas of tutoring, office assistance, lunch buddies, classroom aides/assistants as well as Birthday Gift Bags for every child, snacks for the monthly 3rd Tuesday faculty meetings and emergency requests.  There is also a Prayer Ministry between participating teachers and West Market members.  UMW, Sunday School Classes, Confirmation Classes and individuals also provide building and grounds work, clothing and school supply drives, sponsor Christmas Angel Tree families, and welcome the entire school, faculty and families as our guests for Shrove Tuesday Pancake Day.   With the dedication of West Market’s Ethel Glenn, WES is now a participant in the Broach Theatre programs for kindergarten and first graders in the Greensboro school system.
