Global Mission 2008:
Proyecto Abrigo
Mission Trip (January 17-21)
This was an intergenerational mission trip of 32 to build three
cinderblock houses for impoverished families living in Juarez, Mexico. Proyecto Abrigo
(Project Shelter) is an ecumenical ministry.
Mustard Seed Mission
to Mississippi (May 21-25)
West Market Street will be co-leading a district-wide mission trip to
Mississippi to continue our efforts in helping Hurricane Katrina victims rebuild
their homes.

Mustard Seed Mission
to Guatemala (October 25 - November 2)
West Market plans to send a team to
Guatemala, where the team will work with medical missionaries in clinics
in some of the impoverished villages in Guatemala, construct tin roofs
for homes in one of the villages, and work with our brothers and sisters
in Christ at a Methodist church to provide a Vacations Bible School for
the local children. This promises to be a transformative experience for
all, as we serve as compassionate and loving servants of Jesus Christ
and join in service and fellowship with our fellow disciples in
Guatemala. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone
took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but
when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree.”
Matthew 13: 31-32

Fifteen West Market Street congregation members were joined by 22 United Methodists from throughout the Greensboro district in a district wide mission trip to Bay St. Louis, MS May 23-28. The mission team framed two houses and installed windows and doors in another house, thereby ensuring that three families would move one step closer to moving out of their FEMA trailers and into a home. They also worshipped with their brothers and sisters in Christ at Main St. UMC. Rev. Rick Brooks, the pastor at Main St., joined the mission team for a final time of worship on Sunday evening, where he led a communion service. Also present at that service was Colleen McDevitt, the homeowner served by the West Market Street mission team who sheetrocked her home last summer. Mission team members agree it was a heart transforming experience for all.

"Journey of Hope"
Mission Team Returns from Juarez,
Mexico!
“For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all
things is God.”
Hebrews 3:4 NRSV
Our mission team to Proyecto Abrigo in Juarez, Mexico returned safely home on Monday evening, January 15th, 2007.
As with all mission trips, the primary purpose was to grow together as disciples of Jesus Christ as we nurture each other in the faith and serve together out of our love for Jesus Christ and in response to His call. Whatever we “accomplished” was through the power of the Holy Spirit and to the glory of God, not us. We traveled to Juarez, Mexico to provide hope and physical relief to a family living in difficult conditions. While there, we had the opportunity to grow in our faith as we stepped out of our comfort zones to serve with our brothers and sisters in Christ in a place where the needs of those whom we are serving are great. We were on a Journey of Hope – the hope that resides only in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Proyecto Abrigo (Project Shelter) is an ecumenical ministry whose primary purpose is to provide basic housing for those living in the impoverished Colonia of Tierra Nueva, outside of Juarez, Mexico. WMSUMC mission team members worked with the Proyecto Abrigo mission to build two cinderblock homes for two impoverished families. One of these families was living in a cardboard shack, and both were living in tiny one room “homes”. Team members also had an opportunity to worship with their brothers and sisters in Christ at the Nuevo Pacto church. The homes were dedicated and blessed during a service on Sunday, January 14. Team members also presented each family with a Spanish Bible and a prayer shawl made by members of our Prayer Shawl Ministry Team.
