Welcome to this new page of our website! Watch here for regular reports and updates from our Eugene Street Property Building Committee. We want this page to be one of the ways that you can stay informed about the progress of this important work. The Building Committee wants very much to involve the entire congregation in this project...as we dream about the possibilities of a new facility. Please feel free to contact any of the committee members about any questions, concerns, or ideas that you may have. And, most especially, keep the project in your thoughts and prayers, as we endeavor to make our church a more vibrant part of downtown Greensboro. Update - April 23, 2008 On March 18 the Eugene St. Building Committee gave a presentation to the Administrative Board with the help of Bruce Cantrell of the J Hyatt Hammond architectural firm. He has worked with us on the drawings that have been completed as of that date. These included a 3-dimensional rendering of the outside of the building from all sides. This presentation was well received by the Administrative Board. There was a Q&A sheet that was passed out after the presentation that addressed pertinent issues related to this project. Additional questions came from the audience. At our last building committee meeting on April 14, the decision was made to move the congregational meeting that had been scheduled for May to the fall of 2008. This decision was made to give additional time to prepare how best to communicate why we need the building and who it will serve to enhance our Mission Statement to glorify God as we make , nurture, and send forth disciples of Jesus Christ. This will also give us time for economic conditions to improve and to get the Capital Funds part of this project in place. Update - January 15, 2008 The Eugene Street Property Committee has met every two weeks since August. We have changed and/or modified the floor plan several times. Each time we improved the flow through the facility. We will make a presentation to the Administrative Board in January to discuss our progress to date and then a further update in March We will have several congregational meetings to show conceptual drawings to the entire church membership once the initial plan is approved. We will then have opportunities for Sunday School Class presentations. In the mean time, we need for church members to be thinking how they can help. We will have many committees and we will need help and input from church members in planning and implementing the building of this facility. Please let me know if you would like to serve on one of the committees listed below. Committees: Auditorium – Worship/Music/Drama/Conference, Auditorium - Athletics, Auditorium - Acoustics, Auditorium - Audio–visual, Child Care Rooms, Catering Kitchen, Coffee and Book Store, Gathering Space, Adult Care Room, Building Systems, Signage, Play Ground, and many more. R. B. Arthur Update - October 3, 2007 We are continuing to move along on this project. A topographic survey of the property has been completed. A copy of this survey is available below. In our last report, we discussed narrowing the list of architects down from five to two. A selection committee picked two firms to make a presentation to the full committee. Architectural firms: J Hyatt Hammond and Bradley and Ball made presentations to the full committee. The presentation periods were followed by question-and-answer periods. After discussion, J Hyatt Hammond was selected to be the architectural firm to do the following:
This information and a power point program were presented at the Administrative Board meeting of September 18th.
R. B. Arthur Topographic Survey of the Eugene Street Property, prepared by Homer Wade of Borum, Wade and Associates, P.A. [PDF]
As approved by the Administrative Board, the development of the Eugene Street property will be our next step in carrying out the mission statement of West Market Street United Methodist Church: “to glorify God as we make, nurture, and send forth disciples of Jesus Christ.” The building committee includes the following people: R. B. Arthur, Chair; Jim Roach, Vice-Chair; Betty Betts, Chester Brown, Marion Cochran, Glenn Crihfield, Kara French, Terry Fripp, Mary Belle Gilbert, Tommy Gray, Clay Hall, Elizabeth Montgomery, Til Tillery, Jim Weikel, Scott Wyatt; with staff Rob Hutchinson, Dave Melton, and Scott Nowlan. This group is made up of many talented individuals. Please contact any one of these committee members for any questions, concerns, or ideas you may have. The Rev. Charles Kyker from Christ UMC in Hickory talked to our committee during the Leadership Summit about his new church building and reviewed his architectural drawings. We have visited two churches that were very diverse. One of the churches has emphasized a sports theme and is now trying to move a contemporary service into the building. The second church was designed with a contemporary service in mind, and used the facility to offer recreation, sports and many other activities as part of its program. I have visited other churches that had similar building and program emphases. The Building Committee met officially for the first time August 22. . We reviewed the results and discussed the Congregational Forum’s report that was done in October of 2006 relating to visioning and dreaming about the future of our church. There were over 250 persons involved in developing this document. This was studied for 1˝ years, presented by the Program Ministries Task Force, and approved by the Administrative Board in March of 2007. A copy of that document is shown below. The members of the Task Force were Chester Brown, Betty Betts, Scott Cashion, Terry Fripp, Mary Belle Gilbert, Mike Hogewood, Knox Hughes, Ed Kitchen, Teri Smith, Wes Watson, and Jim Weikel. Staff reps were Jane Brannock, Dave Melton, and Pam Strader. We have developed a list of architects, and are asking them to send us their proposals. We will narrow this list down to 2-3 firms which will then be evaluated by the full Building Committee. Our property borders Friendly Avenue, Commerce Place, Sternberger Place, and Eugene Street. Please go by this property and look at it. Begin dreaming about our construction, and share that dream with us. The only building that will be left on the property will be the ECC. We will start with a blank page. After we choose an architectural firm, and get some idea of what kind of footprint and elevations we have to deal with, we will have meetings with the Council on Ministries and congregation with the architects. This is where we will change the Program Ministries Task Force and Congregational Forum’s visions into a reality. It is imperative that we get the entire congregation involved. Please keep this project in your thoughts and prayers, as we endeavor to make our church a more vibrant part of downtown Greensboro. R. B.
