Haiti Earthquake: The Church Responds |
In the wake of the disaster in Haiti, The United Methodist Church is responding with financial, physical and spiritual aid. Please consider how you might respond. There are two important ways that you can help:
Make UMCOR Health Kits - Health kits provide much needed basic items for persons in need, and they are a simple way that every family can help. Collection boxes will be set up in the Narthex, the Gathering Space and the Fellowship Hall. An initial shipment was sent right after January 23rd. Our United Methodist Women will continue to receive kits through March for another shipment. And, our Western North Carolina Conference United Methodist Women accept UMCOR kits at all conference & district events throughout the year...and deliver them to our conference Mission Response Center for shipment to UMCOR. Members of our West Market Street United Methodist Women can accept kits at any time.
Make Financial Contributions - Support United Methodist Church relief efforts in Haiti. Through UMCOR, our United Methodist Committee on Relief, 100% of your gift will be used to support relief efforts in Haiti. UMCOR provides immediate and long-term disaster relief around the world, and is among the first on the ground...and the last to leave. You can be confident that your gifts will make a difference for the people of Haiti.
Make UMCOR Health Kits
UMCOR
(United Methodist Committee
on Relief) is asking United Methodists to provide health kits that can
be sent to earthquake-devastated Haiti. “For people who are feeling
powerless in being able to help those in Haiti, providing health kits is a
tangible way they can make an immediate difference,” said Kathy Kraiza,
director of UMCOR’s relief supplies. She estimates that hundreds of
thousands of kits will be needed in the days and months ahead. The kits,
valued at about $12 per kit, contain everything from towels and washcloths
to sterile bandages and bar soap. They will be distributed to those who have
been forced to leave their homes as a result of the recent disaster.
UMCOR Health Kit Contents:
Place the following NEW items inside a sealed one-gallon plastic bag.
1 hand towel (15" x 25" up to 17" x 27", no kitchen towels)
1 washcloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, no child-size brushes)
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
In a separate envelope, please include a check payable to UMCOR Sager Brown for at least $2.00 per kit to help with the costs of buying one tube of toothpaste, and the costs of processing and shipping the kits around the world. (NOTE: UMCOR is now purchasing toothpaste in bulk to be added to health kits before shipping to ensure that the product does not expire before it is sent.)
Important Kit Assembly Information
All items included in kits must be NEW items.
All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items-nothing more. Do NOT include any personal notes, money or additional materials in the kits. These things must be painstakingly removed and will delay the shipment.
Bring your UMCOR Health Kits to collection boxes in the Narthex, the Gathering Space, and the Fellowship Hall.
Thank you for your response to the needs of the people in Haiti.
Make
Financial Donations
Financial donations can be made several ways. Our Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church has requested that we make the gifts through the conference so that thank you's and total giving may be accounted for through the conference.
You may make gifts through West Market Street United Methodist Church. Click here to go to our own West Market Connect to make your gift through the church online, where you can specifically designate your gift for "Haiti Earthquake Relief" by choosing that on the drop-down list of "Give to" choices. Or, make your check payable to West Market Street United Methodist Church and designate your gift for "Haiti Quake Relief" on the memo line of your check. You may place your check in the offering plate on Sundays or bring or mail it to the church office. These donations will be forwarded to the Western North Carolina Conference to be used by UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) and the conference in efforts to help the Haiti. 100% of the funds will go to those efforts. UMCOR has released its number for Haiti: Support for relief efforts can be made to Haiti Emergency, UMCOR Advance # 418325. If you wish to send a contribution for UMCOR-use only, please use this number. Again, 100% of the funds go to the efforts.
You may make gifts directly to the Western North Carolina Conference. Click here for a link to the conference online giving page, or make checks payable to "WNCC Treasurer" with "Haiti quake relief" on the memo line, and mail to WNCC Mission/Outreach, PO Box 18005, Charlotte NC 28218.
