Our Future

A vision to serve God led 64 faith-filled Christians to found our congregation in 1830. In 1893, a vision to serve the community of Greensboro led the congregation of 200 members to build a sanctuary to seat 2000 people when Greensboro's population was only 3,500.

Under God's guidance, West Market Street United Methodist Church's vision of service to God, our community, and world continues to challenge us in the 21st century. With God's grace and direction, many people have come to know and experience a personal relationship with Jesus Christ within the walls of our church buildings or through ministries of our congregation.   Countless others have been blessed and gone forth to serve. With a growing ministry and a commitment to remain a regional downtown church, we are focused on making disciples of Jesus Christ who are in service to our community and our world.   With its cross lifted high, our church building is a symbol of our mission statement:

The Mission of
West Market Street United Methodist Church
is to glorify God
as we make, nurture, and send forth
disciples of Jesus Christ.

West Market Street United Methodist Church is a congregation that seeks to be a light in the heart of the city and a magnet for those not yet committed to Christianity. To be that light, we offer programs in a building which is warm, visible, and accessible.  Our most recent renovation included:

* the installation of a new organ
* renovating the sanctuary, education building, and offices
* increasing accessibility for those with disabilities
* a new Early Childhood Center, in order to serve more families with childcare needs
* and more !

We are once again exploring & dreaming about the possibilities of expansion of our ministries...through an addition on our property bounded by Eugene Street, Friendly Avenue, Commerce Place & Sternberger Place.  Read more about that exciting work.

It is an exciting time to be in ministry! Changes at West Market Street United Methodist Church have always opened doors for ministry, and the we believe our current dreaming & exploring will allow us better to serve.  Come and worship with us!
