Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to those questions you have always wanted to to know about our library!

  • How do I check out a book?  Just sign and date the card in the book, and leave the card on the library desk.
  • How long can I keep a book that I check out?   Three weeks is the normal borrowing time.
  • Can I renew a book if I want to keep it a little longer?  Yes
  • Where do I return a book if the library is closed, or if I am in a hurry?  There is a drop off slot under the window just to the left of the reception desk in the main lobby.
  • What if I have a question and there is nobody there to help me?  Leave a question on the desk in the library with your name and phone number, and we will call you.
  • How do I find a book on a particular subject, or by a particular author?  We have a complete card catalog that is always up-to-date...by author, subject, and title.
  • How are the books classified?  We use the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Is the catalog on the computer, or available online?  Not yet.  We are working on putting the entire catalog on the computer.
  • How do I request that a book be added to the library?  Leave a note with author and title that you are suggesting.
  • What is the significance of the wall hangings in the library?  The wall hangings are altar cushions used before the most recent church renovation.
  • What is the significance of the sculpture?  The sculpture, The Favored Scholar, is by the American sculptor, John Rogers (1829-1904).  It is dated in 1873 and was given to the library by Dr. Laurence Alspaugh and Helen Alspaugh.
  • Can I find books in the library to learn more about The United Methodist Church?  Yes.  We have a variety of resources about The United Methodist Church...including The Book of Discipline, books about John Wesley and his writings, Western North Carolina Conference Journals, and more.
  • Where is the Children's Library?  Room 228, just beyond the Gathering Space.  See Children's Library page
  • Can I make a gift to the Library?  Yes.  Funding to purchase new books for the library is acquired through special gifts, honorariums, and memorials.  The gifts of many people through the years have given pleasure and provided learning tools to patrons of the library.  Persons have given funds for individual books, and some have given funds for a complete series of commentaries.  Every gift is appreciated!  If you would like to make a gift, you may do that in a variety of ways.  Checks should be made payable to West Market Street United Methodist Church, and marked "For Adult Library Memorial Fund."  Contact the church office for information about other methods of making a gift.
